Animal Services

The Animal Services Division works within the city limits of Wichita Falls regarding any animal related issue.  Any calls from outside the city limits must be requested through the Wichita County Sheriff’s Department.

You can download a current copy of the City's Animal Control Ordinances here.

We post pictures of all animals picked up by Animal Control or surrendered by citizens of Wichita Falls at www.petango.com/wichitafallsanimalservices

Animal Services Center
This state of the art facility was a long time dream for Animal Control and City leaders. With 36 general dog runs, 18 general cat cages, a cat isolation room, a livestock pen and State of Texas licensed dog and cat quarantine areas for observation of animals who have bitten or scratched citizens, the Animal Services Center is able to house a wide variety of animals.

Animal Services Center services include: surrender of animals-either owned or stray- by residents of Wichita Falls; animal reclaims; city license sales; microchipping; transfer of animals to the Humane Society of Wichita County and other approved rescue partners.

In order to surrender an animal either owned by a citizen or turned in as a stray, the citizen must reside within the city limits of Wichita Falls and will be asked to provide proof of residency at the time of the surrender.

Animal Control
Animal Control Officers (ACOs) patrol within the city limits and respond to calls that come in on our Animal Control line:  940-761-7824 seven days a week between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm. The Animal Control number is answered by an Animal Control Dispatcher Monday-Friday during those hours.

Calls that the ACOs respond to include: picking up stray/loose animals; picking up dead animals; permitting pet stores, groomers and breeders; enforcing laws concerning livestock within the city limits; nuisance wildlife; investigating animal cruelty complaints and enforcing the City of Wichita Falls Animal Ordinances.

After 5pm, on weekends and holidays, all incoming phone calls are answered via an answering machine and only emergency calls are responded to by ACOs.

Emergency calls consist of the following:
  • Dog or cat bites consisting of broken skin on humans
  • Stray Animals with life threatening injuries
  • Loose livestock
  • Dead animals that are a traffic hazard
  • Wild animals in homes
  • Poisonous snakes in homes
  • Dogs attacking other animals
  • Owner arrested with an animal in the vehicle
  • Skunks out in daylight hours only.

Animal Control will NOT respond to the following Non-emergency calls:

  • Owned animals that are sick or injured.
  • Owned animals that are in their own yards that need food, water, shelter or veterinary care.
  • Loose dogs with mange, foaming at the mouth, emaciated, tick infested or any other conditions that are not life threatening.
  • Dead animals on streets that are not a traffic hazard, small dead animals, dead animals on side streets (not main thorough fares) or dead animals in streets in either early/late hours of the day or during time of light or no traffic.
  • Barking dogs
  • Sightings of skunks or other nocturnal animals out at night.
  • Loose pit bulls.  We treat all dogs equally regardless of the breed.

Please note that all calls received after 5pm or on holidays are screened by the on-call Animal Control Officer. This ACO will determine which calls need to be responded to or may wait to be responded to the very next day.

With the opening of the Animal Services Center on February 1, 2011, all animals picked up by Animal Control are now taken to the Animal Services Center. These animals are evaluated and held for three to five days after which they are transferred to the Humane Society of Wichita County or approved rescue groups for adoption or are humanely euthanized.
